Proper oral hygiene, inflammation-free and healthy gum is a precondition of perfectly prepared fillings and partial dentures. That is why it is necessary to clean the surface of the teeth and the area below the gum line thoroughly in order to remove calculus and plaque and afterwards teeth need polishing. Mechanical irritations caused by the calculus itself or by gingivitis, gingival bleeding and bad breath caused by bacteria in the calculus will be ceased after this treatment. Polishing gives the surface of teeth a much lighter colour, which makes them aesthetically more beautiful. Oral hygiene treatments are performed by trained experts, dental hygienists, who use purpose-made instruments. Calculus can be removed with an instrument that uses ultrasound: the scaler. Afterwards calculus below the gum line is removed with Gracey curettes that makes it possible to remove all of the calculus but still not hurt the gum itself. Finally, cleansing is finished with a specific instrument that blows tiny pearls onto the teeth, which remove plaque and discoloration caused by smoking, coffee and food. As the last step, teeth are polished with polishing rubber bell and polishing paste, which gives teeth a perfectly even and glossy surface. This treatment takes approximately an hour, patients are in a comfortable lying position and feel no pain during treatment. Dental treatment can be started a few days after the cleansing. It is recommended to get a cleansing treatment every sixth month in order to avoid recurrence of gingivitis and, on the long run, development of periodontal diseases.
